The simplest way to become part of steampunk is to turn up.
You do not need a perfect costume, specialist knowledge or a carefully invented character before you attend your first event.
Start with an event
Choose a festival, market, club meetup or social gathering that looks welcoming. Smaller local events can be particularly good places to meet people.
Talk to makers and traders
Ask how things were made. Most makers are passionate about their work and often happy to explain materials, techniques and ideas.
Join a local group
A club or community can turn one enjoyable weekend into a year-round interest.
Create something
Modify a hat, write a story, restore an old object, take photographs, make jewellery, learn leatherwork or build a ridiculous fictional machine. Steampunk rewards participation.
Volunteer
Events and community groups often need practical help. Volunteering is also one of the fastest ways to meet people.
