Steampunk fashion is often the first thing people notice, but it is much broader than top hats and goggles.
The best steampunk outfits usually feel like they belong to a person with a story: an airship engineer, explorer, inventor, aristocrat, mechanic, scientist, rogue, performer or something nobody has named yet.
Start with ordinary clothing
You do not need to buy a complete costume. Waistcoats, boots, long skirts, shirts, braces, coats and old workwear can become the basis of an outfit.
Add character, not clutter
A few well-chosen details often work better than covering everything in gears. Consider hats, goggles, pocket watches, belts, gloves, jewellery, leather pouches or handmade props.
Buy from makers when you can
One of the joys of the UK scene is the number of independent creators producing clothing, hats, leatherwork, jewellery and accessories. Buying directly from makers helps keep the community creative and distinctive.
Make it yours
There is no compulsory uniform. Gothic, military, western, explorer, industrial, fantasy and historical influences can all sit comfortably within steampunk when the overall idea feels intentional.
